Do-it-yourself moss ball

Kokedama (planted moss balls) are the new decorative trend from Japan.

PERFECT MATCH! Small, slow-growing plants with little to medium water requirements are best suited for KOKEDAMA - that's Dancing Pixies!

Dancing Pixies and moss balls prefer a partially shaded location and an adequate distance from radiators. Their favourite place is outdoors. Dancing Pixies don't appreciate direct sun and moss balls dry out slower in partial shade. When the moss ball has obviously lost weight, it's time for a "dive", preferably into a bucket of water. This allows the moss and soil mix to absorb the water well.

Here's what you need:

green florist's wire or nylon cord, potting soil as needed, Dancing Pixies, sheets of moss, scissors, hemp or macramé cord for the hanging variant

Step 1

For Dancing Pixies with small root balls, moisten some soil mix and shape it into a ball. Make a hole into it and insert the plant. Then wrap the moss around the ball. For Dancing Pixies with large root balls, forge the root ball into a globular shape and simply wrap the moss directly around the root ball.

Step 2

Attach the moss to the root ball, criss-cross wrapping it with wire or nylon cord. Then shape into a ball. Submerge the finished moss ball in water and allow to drain. Decorate in a planter or make a macramé loop to hang the ball up (also see DIY hanging planter).
